Director of Engineering

Position Summary:

LDJ Manufacturing is home to the Thunder Creek Equipment brand of diesel fuel and service trailers. The Director of Engineering is responsible to lead the engineering team in product design and development, customer custom quoting, and to support operations with a continuous improvement mindset. Vision, collaboration, and a “hands-on” approach are key for this position to deliver team goals. The Director of Engineering will be an integral part of the Executive Management team and will participate in setting strategic direction for the Company.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead a high-performing team. Actively attract, develop, and engage top talent with a demonstrated commitment to the learning and development of others.
  • Consistently lead the engineering team to deliver exceptional results in alignment with company goals
  • Oversee the engineering department and assist engineering cost-effective product design, launch and introduction of new projects/products.
  • Lead estimating, sale, and processing of engineered projects, including custom contract work.
  • Ensure products meet quality standards for the customer and appropriate agency requirements (UL, ASME, NATM, NHTSA & NFPA).
  • Balance team’s short-term, long-term, and shop-support responsibilities.
  • Manage projects, assign work, and conduct project reviews as needed to ensure successful and timely completion of projects.
  • Review and develop Bills of Material and manufacturing processes on new product designs.
  • Oversee R&D to support new designs and concepts, while ensuring manufacturability and leveraging common design principles.
  • Determine Cause and Corrective Actions to resolve issues involving discrepant product or material.
  • Develop and maintain a robust, cost efficient manufacturing processes and product structures consistent with lean manufacturing practices.
  • Understand shop capacity planning related to equipment, processes, and staffing. Must be mindful of process and test capabilities and recognize organizational core competencies. Assist others in root cause and failure analysis as required.
  • Promote culture of continuous improvement and understand lean manufacturing techniques as they apply to eliminate waste and deliver products to customer’s expectations. Drive short-term and long-term improvements to achieve goals.
  • Maintain processes and methodologies for manufacturing operations. Assist in the composition of Capital Appropriation Requests (including payback and net present value analysis) for acquisition of equipment to support emerging and existing technologies as required.
  • Support annual trade shows and product training programs for the sales team and dealers
  • Manage departmental budgets and ensure compliance of company controls and policies.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.


Ability to travel up to 10% of the time with a valid driver’s license.

Ideal Candidate will possess the following skill/qualities:

  • Confident and positive attitude
  • Customer focused
  • Strong Fundamentals of Engineering applied to mechanical design, basic AC/DC electrical circuits, fluid mechanics, basic materials interactions knowledge, and manufacturing prints.
  • PC experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Access, and more extensively with Excel, DBA, SolidWorks or similar CAD software. FEA experience appreciated.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, error free and timely.
  • Ability to effectively communicate process and technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, and structured problem solving
  • Must be familiar with manufacturing processes – including machining, bending, and welding.
  • Strong experience with new product development and product launches.
  • Excellent organizational skills

Education & Experience:

  • Degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering or similar discipline
  • 10+ years engineering experience with 5+ years in a managerial role
